Public health benefits
The 3R’s strategy has reduced waste by 60% in the last decade
-Means improved air quality, less respiratory diseases and less waste is entering is landfill and incineration
As residents are well trained in sorting and sepearting their street, litter is kept at a minimum
-Clean streets improve citizen’s health as it will decrease the amount of vermin and pests in the streets
Public health costs
A large amount of recyclable waste was shipped to LDC’s such as china but they refused to accept it.
Escaping methane gas from decaying waste in landfill also pollutes the community environment
Cost of living benefits
Without the 3R’s strategy more waste would end in landfill, with residents continuing to pay more each year
-Therefore waste does not continue to signifcantly rise each year
Cost of living negatives
Lack of space within Tokyo for landfill due to high density living
Land must be reclaimed from the ocean to ensure waste can be deposited- expensive
Each houseshols pay fees for the collection of rubbish as well as bags and bulk collection.
