4.2 Vocab Flashcards
Tolerance
the ability to surive and reproduce under a range of environmental circumstances
Habitat
the general place where an organism lives
niche
the range of physical and biological conditions in which a species lives and the way the species obtains what it needs to survive and reproduce
resource
any necessity of life (water, nutrients, light, food, space)
competitive exculsion principle
no 2 species can occupy exactly the same niche in exactly the same habitat at exactly the same time, if 2 species occupy the same niche one species will be better at competig for limited resources and eentually exxclude the other species
predation
an interaction in which on animal (predator) captures and feeds on another animal (prey)
herbivory
an interaction in which one animal (herbivore) feeds on producers (plants)
keystone species
a species on which other species on an ecosystem largely depend on such that if it were removed the ecosystem would change drastically
symbiosis
any relationship in which 2 species live closely together
mutualism
a symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit
parasitism
one organism lives on/inside another and harms it
commensalism
one organism benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed
