4.2 - The Solar System Flashcards
How many inner planets in the solar system are there?
4.
How many outer planets are there in the solar system?
4.
Where is the asteroid belt?
In between Mars and Jupiter
Name the 4 terrestrial planets.
Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
What are the conditions on mars?
There is no atmosphere and at night it can get very cold and in the daytime the temperature in can get very high.
What are the conditions on Venus?
There is an atmosphere which traps carbon dioxide and the suns energy.
Explain briefly about the gas giants.
They are mostly made up of gasses such as hydrogen and helium. All the gas giants are very cold and are much bigger than the inner planets. Many of the planets have moons to orbit around them like Saturn which has 66 moons.
Name a dwarf planet
Pluto
Where do scientists think comets come from
The Oort Cloud
State a similarity and a difference between the inner and outer planets
They both have moons.
The Outer planets are gas giants and the inner planets are terrestrial.
Compare planets and aseteroids
Planets are made of rock and are considered terrestrial. Whereas asteroids are smaller than a planet and can be as tiny as a spec of dust or as big as a dwarf planet.
What’s the difference between a planet and a dwarf planet?
A normal planet has cleared the area around it whereas a dwarf planet
