Q

Skin ?

A

Water proof and produces sebum - an oily substance with antiseptic properties ALSO produces sweat - a mixture of chemicals that includes lattice acid and lysozymes . It also impenetrable to pathogens

Tears ?

A

Protect the eye removing dust that may contain bacteria. They also contain enzymes called lysozymes.

Q

Mucus ?

A

Acts as an impenetrable barrier to pathogens in is found in many organ systems e.g the respiration , digestive and reproductive. It also contains lysozymes

Q

Acid ?

A

In the stomach HCl ( gastric juice) has low pH and affects the enzyme action allowing the body to protect itself.

Q

If a pathogen enters the body the capillieries become.…?

A

Leaky, as plasma escapes, the area becomes swollen ( known as the inflammatory stage ) but more importantly phagocytic white blood cells exit the capillaries.

Q

The phagocytic cells being…?

16
Q

Engulfing process of the phagotic white blood cells

A

> phagocyte attracted to chemicals produced by the pathogen

> As it is attracted the membrane invaginates and begins to enclose the pathogen

> As it engulfs the pathogen the membrane forms a vesicle ( phagosome ) around the pathogen

> lysosomes fuse with the vesicle, they contain hydrolic enzymes and they hydrolyse the pathogen

> The soluble digested parts are absorded into the cytoplasm

17
Q

Non-spesific immunity

A

Rapid and carried out by many white blood cells e.g phagocytes

18
Q

Specific immune response

A

Reposonse to the detection of pathogens in the body linked to self and no self recognision.
