4.1.2 Glossary Flashcards
What is an atomic model?
A representation of the structure of the atom
What is an alpha particle?
A particle made of 2 protons and 2 neutrons
What is atomic number?
The number of protons in an atom
What are Dalton’s atoms?
Solid spheres which cannot be divided into smaller parts
What is an electron?
A very small, negatively charged particle within an atom
What is electronic structure?
A representation of the number of electrons in each energy level
What is an energy level?
Also known as shells, the orbit of an electron around a nucleus
What is an isotope?
Atoms with the same atomic number but different mass number
What is mass number?
The number of protons and neutrons in an atom
What is a neutron?
A neutral particle within an atom with a mass of one
What is a nuclear atom?
A model of the atom containing a nucleus at its centre
What are nuclei?
The plural for nucleus
What is a nucleus?
The centre of an atom which contains protons and neutrons
What is the plum pudding model?
A ball of positive charge with negative electrons embedded in it
What is a proton?
A positive particle within an atom with a mass of one
What is radius?
The distance from the outer edge of a circle or sphere to its centre
What is relative charge?
The charge of one particle compared to another
What is relative mass?
Mass of an element, taking into account the proportions of its isotopes
What is a subatomic particle?
A small particle found within atoms, e.g. electrons, protons, neutrons
