4.1.11 Opsonins, Agglutinins and Anti-Toxins Flashcards
1
Q
How can antibodies act as antitoxins?
A
- Bind to toxins produced by pathogens
- Neutralising them
2
Q
What is opsonisation?
A
- Antibodies bind to pathogen
- Making them readily identifiable to phagocytes
- Phagocytes bind to their constant region (heavy chains)
- Phagocytosis occurs
3
Q
What is agglutination?
A
- Antibodies cause pathogens to clump together
- Reducing mobility of pathogens
- Phagocytes can engulf multiple pathogens at a time
