4.1 Stereoisomerism Flashcards
What is stereoisomerism?
Compound which have the same molecular formula and structual formula but different spacial arrangement.
In an alkene, what is the double bond made up of?
Sigma and pi bond.
What must be present for E/Z isomers to exist?
A carbon-carbon double bond along with two different groups attached to each carbon molecule.
How would you know if a molecule exhibits either an E or a Z isomer?
If the highest priority group is on the (Z)ame side then it’s Z. If they’re on the (E)pposite then it’s the E
What is required for optical isomerism to occur?
A chiral carbon.
What is a pair of optical isomers called?
Enantiomers.
What does being optically active mean?
They roate the plane of polarised light.
What is an equimolar mixture of two optically active enantiomers called?
A racemic mixture.
