4.1 Mass, Force, and Newtons Law Flashcards
What is the study of dynamics?
explanation of an objects motion in terms of the forces that act on an object
What is a force?
push or pull exerted by one object on another
What is Newtons First law of motion?
an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by a net force
What is inertia?
natural resistance to change in an objects state of motion
What is the mass of an object?
quantitative measurement of its inertia; measures how much matter is contained in an object
What is Newtons second law?
acceleration results from a total net force acting on an object
What is the equation for Newtons second law?
F = ma
What are the dimensions of a newton?
kgm/s2
What is Newtons third law of motion?
for every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction
What is the equation for Newtons third law?
F(1 on 2) = -F(2 on 1)
How do you distinguish between Newtons second and third laws?
second = focuses on one object
third = focuses on different objects
