4.1 Introduction to Water Systems Flashcards
Water Cycle/Hydrological Cycle
A (closed) system when considered on a global scale consisting of flows (transfers and transformations) and stores of water.
Transfers in the water cycle
- Precipitation
- Water flowing down a stream
- Infiltration of water through the soil profile into the aquifer.
Transformations in the water cycle
Evaporation, melting, freezing, condensation.
Evaporation
Liquid to a gas (a transformation)
Condensation
Gas to a liquid (a transformation)
Precipitation
Water falling to the ground as rain, snow, hail etc (a transfer)
Advection
Movement of clouds by the wind (a transfer)
Infiltration
Water soaking into the ground
Aquifer
Groundwater stored in a layer of porous rock
Runoff
Water flowing across and impermeable surface (or a saturated soil)
Transpiration/Evapotranspiration
A special kind of evaporation from plant leaves.
Percolation
Filtering of liquid through porous material
Different from infiltration in that it occurs within the porous material. Infiltration is movement from the outside in to a porous material.
Soil Moisture
Water in the pore spaces of the soil profile.
Not to be confused with an aquifer (which is a saturated layer of porous rock)
Catchment
Used in the context of rivers.
Drainage area flowing into the same flow/output.
Water Budget
A model accounting for the inputs and outputs of water in a system.
