4.1 Force, mass and weight Flashcards
Define mass.
Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object, typically expressed in kilograms or grams, and is independent of gravity.
A net (resultant) force acting…
…on an object will make the object accelerate in the direction of the net force. A force of 1N will give object of 1kg mass an acceleration of 1ms^-2 in the direction of the force.
What is the weight of an object defined as?
The gravitational force acting on the object through its centre of mass.
What is friction defined as?
The force that is in the opposite direction of the direction of travel, arises when two surfaces are in contact.
Define drag
The resistive force on an object travelling through a fluid; the same as friction.
Define tension
The force within a stretched cable or rope.
Define upthrust.
An upward buoyancy force acting on an object when it is in fluid.
