Q

what are the roles of carbs, fats and proteins in exercise?

A

Carbs: fuels exercise - moderate to high intensity
Fat - Fuels low intensity for extended period
Proteins - used to repair the body tissue, rarely used to power muscle

Q

what is ATP and where is it produced?

A

Adenosine Tri-phosphate, it is created in the mitochondria and is fuelled by fats and carbs

Q

Discuss the function and characteristics of the ATP-PC energy system? (intensity, duration, by-products)

A
  • No o present
  • 10-15 sec
  • high intensitty
  • PC stored in muscles
  • Restored in 2-3 minutes

Q

Discuss the function and characteristics of the lactic acid energy system? (intensity, duration, by-products)

A
  • Synthesizers ATP without O
  • Used after PC is depleted
  • 60-90 secs
  • Energy from glucose/glycogen (glucose - singularity, glycogen - multiple)
  • Breaking down glycogen/glucose is called glycogen
    Moderate to high intensity

Q

Discuss the function and characteristics of the aerobic energy system? (intensity, duration, by-products)

A
  • Resynthesises with O
  • Low to moderate intensity
  • Uses a variety of energy sources
  • Carbs, fat, protein (in order of preference)
  • May breakdown muscle if these energy sources are depleted (e.g. marathon runner)
  • By-products: heat, CO2, H20
