4.1 Flashcards
Name 4 biological theories relating to policy change
Drug treatments-heroin and methadone
Eugenics-sterilisation
Diet control
Alcohol abuse - Antabuse
Give a brief description methadone heroin treatments
Heroin addiction often leads addicts to commit crime. Methadone is used to treat addicts as a long term alternative.
Give 3 positives to methadone
- it is legal
- it helps to prevent withdrawal symptoms
- it also helps to reduce crime due to the lessened amount of heroin users
A disadvantage of methadone
- People may refuse to take the methadone
- People state it is just “replacing one drug for another”
- People using it might become tolerant or reliant on methadone
Briefly describe compulsory sterilisation
Eugenics state that “genetically unfit” people should be prevented from breeding. Favouring policies that led them to favour the sterilisation of the “defectives” - such as criminals and those with medical illnesses.
Describe the advantages of compulsory sterilisation
- a strength of compulsory sterilisation is that it causes social improvement which reduces crime
Describe the disadvantages of compulsory sterilisation
- A weakness of this theory is that it is unethical and discriminatory
Briefly describe the diet modification control theory
Diet can be modified to change antisocial behaviour. For example, vitamin B3 has been used to treat some forms of schizophrenia, a disorder commonly associated with violent behaviour.
