4.1 Flashcards
what are species?
a group of living organisms that consist of similar individuals that are capable of interbreeding or exchanging genes.
what is a population?
a group of individuals of the same species living and interbreeding in the same area.
what is an ecosystem?
where all prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells creatures and the weather support each other and work together.
what is a community?
a community is various species that interact and are from a common location. - forest with trees and animals.
what are heterotrophic organisms?
they get their organic nutrients from consuming other organic orgs or organic matter. they rely on other sources of organic carbon for energy and growth.
what are autotrophic organisms?
they produce their own food from chemical substances.
what are consumers?
- also known as heterotrophs
- they need to eat other plants/animals to get energy.
what is detritus?
dead organic material, waste, debris or matter composed of leaves, other plants and feral material.
what is ingestion?
taking something into the body by absorption, eating or drinking.
what is internal digestion?
food being digested in a closed system where broken down products can be retained.
what is external digestion?
- outside cell and organism mainly by fungi.
- digestive enzymes called exoenzymes are needed to externally digest.
what is a saprotroph?
an organism that feeds on nonliving organic matter (detritus). it is a fungus that lives on plant parts, soil, and decaying organic substance.
what are detritivores?
heterophobic organisms that get nutrients by feeding
