Stated the USSR was heavily armed and wanted to expand communism across the entire world, therefore there could be no peaceful co-existence, but USA was stronger so could ‘contain’
Novikov Telegram
Response to Long, stated US were economically strong and wanted world domination, stated it needed E Europe as a buffer zone. Set scene for the cold war, USSR would attempt to dominate E Europe and US would commit to the policy of ‘containment’
Iron Curtain Speech 1946
“an iron curtain has descended across the continent”, the allied force had spent 6 years fighting fascism, only to have half the continent now under soviet dictatorship
The Truman Doctrine
Declared USA would provide aid for any country under the threat of communism. Now US was committed to a policy of containment
The Marshall Plan
Over $12 billion sent to countries in Europe after the war, so that it was less likely for communism to spread. Had to have free elections and trade
Cominform
Tighten soviet control over E Europe, to create a trade network and was able to keep all communist governments under tight control
Comecon
Financial aid to soviet controlled countries
Berlin blockade + airlift
Blockade as West Berlin was taking aid from Marshall Plan
There was a plane every minute
