Finish that CANNOT be repaired using moisture or heat
Shellac
What is the procedure for repairing dents and scratches?
- Wet with distilled water then leave it for a while
- Iron with firm pressure over a wet rag
- Remove cloth and evaluate, repeat if needed
If you cannot repair a defect using moisture and heat what can you use?
Filler
If using moisture to repair a dent on veneer applied with a water soluble glue, dont use steam but
Wet it, cover with plastic, and leave a weight on top overnight to hold veneer in place
If your filler doesnt match your wood….
Tint that sucker to match
After you’ve made a grain in repair, don’t forget…

What is paste filler usually used for?
To give open grained wood a smooth finish
What is TINTED paste filler usually used for?
To create a contrast to the natural colour of the wood, highlighting a highly porous grain
What can you use to add tints to paste filler?
tempra paint powder
dye powder
universal colourants
METALLIC DRY POWDERED PIGMENTS
Tinted paste filler procedure
Start with sanded piece
Stain to base colour
Washcoat with finish to protect base stain
LET DRY OR ELSE
Apply filler across grain in a thin even coat
Let it flash off, then wipe across grain with an open weave rag removing paste from face, but leaving it in the grain
Finish by wiping along the grain with a soft cloth to achieve final look
Seal ‘er up and topcoat that lil stinker
What does polishing a top coat accomplish?
Increases glossy smooth look
Why would you polish a surface with pumice powder?
Remove large scratches in finish and take off small layer of finish
Used with an oil/mineral spirit and a felt pad to remove scratches left by pumice powder
