40.1 animal form and function Flashcards
body fluids
interstitial fluid
and
circulatory fluid
function of body fluids
excrete waste and get nutrients
basic animal systems
digestive
- circulatory
- respiratory
- excretory
animal basic tissues
- epithelial
- connective
- muscles
- nervous
epithelial cell shapes
cubodial
columnar
-squamous
epithelial arrangements
simple
- stratified (multiple tiers of cells)
- pseudostratified (single layer that varies in cell height)
what separates epithelial tissue from underlying tissues
basal surface and basal lamina (a dense mat of extracellular matrix)
connective tissues
bind and support other tissues in the body
-consists of a asperse population of cells scattered through an extracellular matrix
6 major types of connective tissue
loose
- cartilage
- fibrous
- adipose-stores fat -insulates
- blood
- bone
connective tissue fibers
- collagenous–strength +flexibility (non elastic)
- elastic–easily stretched (resilient-snaps back to original position)
- reticular–thin and branched
for example, your skin doesn’t rip off b/c of collagenous and reticular, but it is resilient
muscle tissues
skeletal muscle
(AKA straited muscle) -
–cardiac muscles –unconsious tasks (also straited)
–smooth muscle- involuntary actions (not straited)
found in digestive tract bladder, arteries etc.
nervous tissue
sense stimuli and transmit signals
-send nerve impulses
neurons
nerve cells
-have axons
axons
extensions on neurons that transmit nerve impulses
glial cells or glia
nourish
insulate
replenish neurons
