40 - Vegetative Propogation Flashcards
Vegetative propagation
A type of asexual reproduction in plants
Asexual reproduction
The production of a new individual from one parent
Natural vegetative propagation
Stem- runners - strawberry
Root - suckers - raspberry
Leaf - leaflets - Devils backbone
Bud - new growth points on all plants - onion
Artificial vegetative propagation
Cutting - small piece of parent plant + root powder, IBA or NAA
Layering - stem bent into soil, growth regulators added, climbing plants, clematis
Grafting - shoot (scion) of one plant attached to the root system (stock) of another plant - roses/apples
Tissue culture - growing a large number of plantlets in nutrient medium from small tissue samples - expensive + labour intensive
Advantages of seed (sexual) reproduction
Variation
Disease resistance
Less overcrowding due to seed dispersal
Dormant seeds survive in soil
Advantages of vegetative (asexual) reproduction
Simple process
No external agent needed
Young plants show fast growth
Little waste
