40 Stories Flashcards
Calming of the Storm
Jesus said to the disciples: “let’s go over to the other side.”
Leaving the crowd behind, they went into the boat and crossed towards the other side.
After some time, a furious storm began to brew which shook the boat everywhere.
Jesus was asleep in the stern on a cushion and the disciples went to him and asked: “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
He then got up and rebuked the wind and the waves
saying: “Quiet, Be still!” Then the wind died down.
After this, he asked the disciples “Why are you so afraid, do you still have no faith?”
They were all terrified and said “Who is this, even the wind and the waves obey him?”
The Baptism of Jesus
At that time, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John the Baptist in the River Jordan.
Just as Jesus emerged from the water, great events unfolded.
The sky was torn open and The holy spirit descended onto him in the form of a dove.
A voice came from heaven saying: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
Jesus’ Temptation
At once, the Holy Spirit sent Jesus out into the wilderness.
He was there for forty days being tempted by Satan.
He was with wild animals and angels attended him.
Caesarea Philippi
Whilst Jesus and The Disciples were on the road to Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples: “Who do people say I am?”.
To this, they replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”
“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered: “You are the Messiah.” Then Jesus told them not to tell anyone about him.
He then began to tell them about his death, saying that the Son of Man must suffer many things in order to forgive the Sin of the world.
Peter however, began to rebuke Jesus for he had expected the Messiah to be a warrior.
Jesus then said “Get behind me, Satan!” You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
The Transfiguration
After six days, Jesus took Peter, James and John with him to the top of a high mountain.
Before them, his clothes shone a dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.
And before them also, stood Elijah and Moses who were talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi it is good for us to be here. Let us put up shelters - one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” for he did not know what to say as he was so frightened.
After this, a voice came from the heavens stating: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him.”
Entry into Jerusalem
As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany near the mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples to fetch him a Colt from the village ahead to them that was tied to a tree and that no one had ridden before.
They asked, “Why are you doing this?” to which Jesus said “The Lord needs it and will send it back shortly.”
When the two disciples arrived and began to untie the donkey, the people around asked what they were doing, they said that Jesus had told them to and so they let them go with the Colt.
When they brought the Colt to Jesus, they threw their cloaks over it and Jesus sat on it.
Many people had spread their cloaks onto the ground whilst others spread branches and palm leaves cut from the trees.
Those who went ahead and followed shouted:
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything but since it was late, went back out to Bethany with the disciples.
Arranging the betrayal of Jesus
The Passover and festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away and the Chief Priests and teachers of the Law were scheming to arrest Jesus and kill him in secret.
“But not during the festival,” they warned, “or the people may riot.
Then Judas went to the chief priests to betray Jesus.
They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So, he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The anointing at Bethany
While he was in Bethany, a woman came with a jar of very expensive perfume made from pure nard.
She broke the jar and poured the perfume onto Jesus’ head.
Some of those who were present were asking: “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” and they rebuked her harshly.
“Leave her alone,” Jesus said. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
The Last Supper
On the first day of the festival of the unleavened bread, Jesus’ disciples asked “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
So Jesus told them “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
So the disciples went out and found things just as Jesus had said, so they prepared for the Passover.
When Jesus arrived, the 12 were already eating and he said “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
They were upset by this news and each asked “Surely you don’t mean me?”
Jesus said it was one of the Twelve, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
Jesus in Gethsamane
Jesus and the disciples went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
He took Peter, James and John with him and began to be deeply distressed, he told them his soul was overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death and asked them to stay and keep watch.
He went on a little bit further and then fell to the ground and prayed that everything in the next hour would pass him if possible.
He said, “Abba Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
Then when he returned to the disciples, he found them sleeping. He said to Simon, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Once more, he went away to pray and upon returning for the second time he found them asleep again. They did not know what to say because their eyes were so heavy.
Returning for a third time, he found them sleeping again and said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus’ arrest
Just as he was speaking, Judas approached followed by a crowd armed with swords and clubs sent by the chief priests and elders.
Judas arranged a signal for them. He told them, “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.”
At once, Judas approached Jesus and kissed him, saying “Rabbi!”
The men seized Jesus and arrested him, then one of the disciples near Jesus grabbed his sword and struck a servant of the High Priest, cutting off his ear.
Then, Jesus said to the crowd: “Am I leading a rebellion that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
At once, all the disciples fled around him.
A young man, who was with Jesus wearing nothing but a linen garment fled naked, leaving his garment behind because he was so scared.
Jesus before the Sanhedrin
They took Jesus to the high priest, chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law who were all together.
Peter followed him at a distance and upon arrival, sat with the guards and warmed himself on the fire.
The chief priests and Sanhedrin tried to find evidence against him but they could not. Many falsely testified against him, but their statements did not agree.
Then some others gave false testimony against him saying that they’d heard him say that he would destroy the temple and within three days rebuild it, not made with human hands.
Then the high priest stood up and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” But Jesus did not respond.
Again, the High Priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Then the High Priest tore his clothes asking “Why do we need anymore witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy, what do you think?”
Then all the crowd condemned him as deserving of death, some even began to spit at him, strike him with their fists and say, “Prophesy!”
So, the guards took him and beat him.
Jesus Before Pilate
Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, teachers of the law and all of the Sanhedrin made their plans and handed Jesus over to Pilate.
“Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate.
Jesus simply responded, “You have said so.”
Then, the Chief Priests accused him of many things and Pilate asked, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
But Jesus still said nothing, and Pilate was stunned.
It was custom of the festival to release a prisoner requested by the people.
Pilate asked the crowd, “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” knowing that this way the Chief Priests opinion mattered little.
However, they stirred up the crowd and so they asked for Barabbas, a murderer, to be released instead of Jesus.
Pilate then asked what he should do with Jesus, to which the people said “Crucify Him!”
Pilate asked them why, but the cries grew louder and so, not wanting to displease the crowd, Pilate had Jesus flogged and handed him over to be crucified.
The Crucifixion of Jesus
A man from Cyrene was passing through the city, and the guards forced him to carry Jesus’ cross.
The brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha and offered him wine mixed with myrrh. However, Jesus declined.
And they crucified him and divided up his clothes, casting lots onto who would win what.
It was 9 in the morning when the crucifixion took place, above Jesus a notice was nailed to the cross saying, “The King of the Jews.”
They also crucified to rebels with him, one on either side of him.
Those who passed by mocked and insulted Jesus, telling him to come down and rebuild the temple.
Similarly, the chief priests and elders did the same, proclaiming that he could save others but not himself.
The Death of Jesus
When noon came around, darkness came around the whole land for three hours until three in the afternoon.
At 3pm, Jesus cried out “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?”
When some of those who were standing close by heard this they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
Then, someone ran and filled a sponge with wine vinegar and placed it onto a spear and offered it to Jesus to drink.
He then said to leave Jesus alone and see whether Elijah would come and take him down.
With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last breath.
Then suddenly, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. A centurion nearby Jesus said now that he was dead “Surely, this man was the Son of God!”
Some women were also watching from a distance, among them were Mary Madgelene, Mary the mother of James and Salome. These women had cared for his needs in Galilee, many other women who had came from Jerusalem were also still there.
