Q

How significant were bank failures as a cause of the Great Depression?

A

BANK FAILURES
- Stock market had investments from banks
- When panic spread banks didn’t have the money to pay people back, meaning lots of money is lost and savings are lost.
- Mortgages also collapse and people lose their homes
- Companies can’t invest because there are no banks
- When banks start to collapse confidence falls. Less confidence in the economy means people buy less, people want their money and that banks don’t lend or loan money.

OVERPRODUCTION
- Domestic market was saturated as everyone that could buy the product has already bought it

UNEVEN DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH

MECHANISATION OF INDUSTRY AND WAR

- Women are needed to work during the War as men go away to fight
- When men come back, women can perform jobs to the same level due to mechanisation but can be paid less so there is higher employment in women

LIVES NOT CHANGED
- People in the South didn’t benefit and in rural areas.
- There’s no electricity and water and so things aren’t really mechanised
