4.0 Isotopes Flashcards
Define Isotope
A variation in number of neutrons
Do chemical properties change?
no
Can any properties change?
Yes, the mass/colour/density etc can change
Stable isotopes are
not radioactive
- repulisve/attractive forces in nucleaus are balenced
Unstable isotopes are
radioactive
- atrractive froce (strong nuclear force) is stronger than the repulsive (electrostatic repulsion)
- or the opposite
List the types of radiation
Gamma
Alpha
Beta
How long are radioisotopes (radioactive isotopes) emitting energy for
until they are stable
What does alpha radiation emit
- ejects up to 4 alpha particles
- lose 2 protons/neutrons (same as the neucleus of a Hydrogen atom)
What does beta radiation emit
- emits 1 electron and 1 antineutron (neutron changes to proton)
-or emits 1 positron and neutrino
(proton changes to neutron)
What does gamma radiation emit
just energy no mass
What is a half life?
the time it takes for a sample of n element to nuclear decay half its original value
