What causes it?
Needing to feel in control
Emotional distress

What risk factors are there?
Mental health disorders eg schizophrenia, depression
Adverse life events
Lack of support
Isolation / loneliness
How does it present?
Signs of intentional injury often on wrists, thighs, chest
Cuts, bruises
What signs may the patient have on examination?
Signs of mental health disorders
What other conditions might present similarly?
Physical abuse
Substance abuse
How would you investigate?
Detailed questioning about cause of self-harm
Screen for infection / severe bleeding / fractures
What treatments are there?
Psychological therapy
Drugs in cases of depression or schizophrenia
What complications are there?
Suicide / parasuicide
Increasing severity of self-harm
