4. Radiological Interpretation - CBCT Flashcards
why CBCT?
provides desired diagnostic yield
low patient risk
low cost
when is a pan or PA useful?
initial and / or postoperative assessment
when is a pan or PA unsuitable?
unsuitable as a single imaging source for dental implant assessment due to inablity to assess the buccolingual dimension and inherent inacuraces
why are CBCTs not used as routine postoperative assessment?
too much exposure
too much artifact
imaging protocol should include the ____ FOV necessary
smallest
CBCT image acquisition - depends on 4 aspects
- x-ray generation
- image detection system (receptor)
- image reconstruction (computer)
- image display
2 principles of CBCT
- x-ray source and detector move synchronously
- x-ray beam is usually pulsed to reduce exposure
why not use CBCT on every patient?
must be aware of radiation exposure
stochastic effects
main effect: cancer!
-risk is proportional to dose
-has no threshold dose
-severity is independent of the dose
deterministic effects
includes in utero birth defects, skin erythema, cataracts
has a threshold dose, above hwich the effect happens
are stochastic or deterministic effects of concern in dentistry?
stochastic
DICOM
digital imaging and communication in medicine
proprietary files
are specific to the manufacturer
can only be opened by the manufacturer’s software
