4. Mechanics Flashcards
What is a scalar quantity?
Has magnitude but no direction.
What is the definition of a vector quantity?
Both magnitude and direction
What is adding two or more vectors called?
Finding the resultant of them
How do you find the resultant of vectors?
Draw a scale drawing (tip to tail). Find the length and angle of the resultant vector.
How do you find the resultant when two angles are at right angles to each other?
Use pythagoras or trigonometry
What does a free body force diagrams show?
All forces acting on a single body
Is force a vector or scalar quantity?
Vector
If the body is in equilibrium, what will the forces in each direction be?
Balanced
If a body is in equilibrium, how is it moving?
It is at rest or moving at a constant velocity.
When you have 3 coplanar forces acting on a body in equilibrium, what can you draw?
A closed loop triangle
What is a moment?
The turning effect of a force
What is the symbol for a moment?
M
What do you multiply force by to get a moment of a force?
Perpendicular distance from the point to the line of action of the force (d).
What is the line of action of a force?
A line along which it acts
What does coplanar mean?
Along the same plane (line).
What does the principle of moments state?
For a body to be in equilibrium, the sum of the clockwise moments about any point equals the sum of the anticlockwise moments about the same point.
What is a couple?
A pair of forces of equal size which act parallel to each other, but in opposite directions.
What is the mass of an object?
The amount of matter in it.
What is inertia?
The greater an objects mass, the greater it’s resistance to a change in velocity.
What is force measured in?
Newton’s (N)
What is weight measured in?
Newton’s (N)
What is weight?
The force experienced by mass due to a gravitational field.
How do you calculate weight (mg)?
Mass x gravitational field strength
What is the gravitational field strength on earth?
9.81 m s‐²
