global governance
refers to the rules, norms and laws that regulate and form global systems
why is global governance important
as the world becomes more interdependent, must be sustainable development across all nations, especially a global response to issues with the global commons
recently global governance has focused on
environmental issues, trade and investment inequalities, poverty reduction, human rights violations, civil conflicts, financial instability
global commons
the earths shared resources or areas that lie outside of the political reach of any one nation
glocalisation
describe products/services that are distributed globally but which are fashioned to appeal to the consumers in a local market
environmental sustainability
a state in which the demands placed on the environment can be met without reducing the quality of the environ. for the future
NGOs
any non-profit, voluntary citizens group with common interest, which is organised on a local, national, int’n level
united nations
an int’n organisation made up of 193 member states whose aim is to promote int’n peace and cooperation

high seas, atmosphere, antarctica, outer space
antarctic convergence
a curve continuously encircling antarctica where cold northward flowing antarctic waters meet the relatively warmer waters of the sub-antarctic
adaptation
any alteration or adjustment in the structure or function of an organism/system which enables it to survive better in changing environ. conditions
mitigation
includes any actions, strategies, measures or projects undertaken (by mankind) to offset the known detrimental impacts of a process
resilience (ecological)
the amount of disturbance that an ecosystem can withstand without changing existing structures and processes
why is global governance difficult to achieve
different levels of development/ ideologies and political objectives/societies and cultures
scarcity of resources will raise the stakes in terms of what countries are prepared to do to secure more resources for themselves
