Tend to get eye disease in hyperthyroidism (graves). Develop inflammation of the orbitla and periorbital tissues
proptosis
lid lag/retraction
swollen extraoccular muscles esp. inf and med recti
can cause optic nerve damage and blindness
What other metabolic disease affect the eye?
Diabetes
Wilsons- kayser- Fleischer rings
Hyperpth- corneal calcification/conjunctival
gout- can deposit in the eye=sore
What rheumatological conditions can affect the eye?
Ra: dry eyes, epi/scleritis
SLE: vascular disease
GCA: AION
Sjorgens: dry eyes

what is bechets disease and how is it diagnose?
idiopathic multisystem disorder
eyes involved in 76%
oral ulceration with 2 of the following: genital ulceration
folliculitis/erythema nodosum
pathology test
eye involvement either ant uveitis or retinitis CAN BLIND
What is blepharitis? How is it treated?
seborrhoea disorder of the MEIBOMIAN glands, gritty sensation.
Treated with lid hygeine and tetracycline abx
How can SJS affect the eye?
Pseudomembranous conjunctivits
What is herpes zoster ophthalmicus
shingles affecting CNV1
can get keratitis, uveitis, glaucoma
need ophthalmic examination
How can you tell if herpes zoster will affect the globe?
Hutchingsons sign- involvement of nasocilliary nerve= vesicles on tip of nose ((and therefore potential for globe)
How can membrane pemphigoid affect the eye?
Can get inflammation followed by scarring, causing dry eye, symblepharon, abmyloblepharon, keratopathy
How do you treat pemphigoid affecting the eye?
immunosuppression and also potentially surgical release of adhesions
what is sturge weber syndrome?
Condition where you get a port wine stain on the face, seizures and mental retrdation. 50% have glaucoma
When would you suspect chlamydial conjunctivitis? how would you manage?
if not improving with treatment, can get preauricular lymphadenopathy
Azithromycin 1g stat is treatment and refer to GUM
How can HIV affect the eye?
CMV retinitis (aids defining condition) get pizza pie fundoscopy, flame haemorrhages involve ever more of the retina. can cause blindness, give gancyclovir
Candidiasis of vitreous and aqueous
Karposi sarcoma can affect the lids or conjunctiva
which systemic treatments can affect the eye?
Steroids can give you cataracts
Tamoxifen, hydroxychloroquine= retinitis
quinine= optic atrophy
amiodorone- corneal change
