In the Vedas, they were the composers of the Vedic hymns.
Later on, they were also considered to be the keepers of the sacred tradition and would remind men of the eternal truth of their nature.
They practised asceticism and were considered by some to be the progenitors of the human race.
The epics are full of the adventures and teachings of these sages
