4 Different Tectonic Plate Boundaries Flashcards
What is a collision plate boundary?
If two continental plates collide, neither can sink and so the land buckles upwards to form fold mountains. This is called a collision boundary . Earthquakes can occur at collision boundaries.
What is a convergent plate boundary?
A convergent plate boundary , also known as a destructive plate boundary , usually involves an oceanic plate and a continental plate. The plates move towards one another and this movement can cause earthquakes. As the plates collide, the oceanic plate is forced beneath the continental plate. This causes earthquakes and mountains and volcanoes to form.
What is a divergent plate boundary?
A divergent boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other. Along these boundaries, earthquakes are common and magma (molten rock) rises from the Earth’s mantle to the surface, solidifying to create new oceanic crust.
What is a transform plate boundary?
This type of plate boundary occurs where tectonic plates slide horizontally past each other. This is known as a transform plate boundary. As the plates rub against each other, huge stresses can cause portions of the rock to break, resulting in earthquakes. Places where these breaks occur are called faults.
What plate boundary is a composite volcano found at?
Destructive
Where is a shield volcano found ?
Constructive
What is continental drift ?
When the plates move over time
What causes the plates to move?
When the core heats up it causes the mantle to fall and rise which is called a convection current , this causes the plates to move.
Name 3 tectonic plates
Pacific plate , Eurasian plate and Antarctic plate
Name 3 properties of a shield volcano?
Large slowly sloping slides
Lava spreads fast
Found at constructive plate boundaries
3 properties of composite volcanos ?
Tall steep sides
Explosive eruptions
Found at destructive plate boundaries
How are earthquakes measured
The Richter scale
What’s the origin of the earthquake called
The epicentre
