M2L2 - Climate Flashcards
1
Q
Forest fire inequity
A
- Rural and remote communities often
harder to access - Limited access to emergency and support services
- Closer proximity to areas at highest risk of burning
- Often omitted from proactive investment to mitigate impacts from fire and flood
2
Q
Actual risk
A
Chance of harmful event occuring
3
Q
Perceived risk
A
Level of risk that an individual feels is present
4
Q
Factors that influence perceived risk
A
- Temporal proximity to event
- Available and communicated information on the risk
- Personal experience
- Knowledge of the driver of events
- Potential for harmful impacts from the event
5
Q
Weather
A
- What current (atmospheric) conditions are and particularly how it is affecting humans
- Minute to minute, hour to hour, week to week
- Includes air temp, wind, humidity etc
6
Q
Climate
A
- Long term average of weather
- 30 years minimum
- Change in climate will result in shift in observed weather patterns
7
Q
Environment
A
- The surroundings in which we live
- E.g. Climate, animals, soil, etc
8
Q
Proxy
A
- A way of inferring past environments
- Physical characteristics of environment that are indirect measurements of environmental conditions
- Cover different temporal scale
9
Q
Two different pieces to measure proxies
A
- The climate variable
- Age/time
