formal powers of the executive branch
- power of veto (pocket veto too)
- commander in chief of armed forces
informal powers
- bargaining
- can bargain w congress to get their favorable legislation passed (depends on approval rating)
- persuasion
- has the ear of the nation and can persuade them to put pressure on representatives to pass legislation in line with their agenda
- executive order
- an authoritative instruction from the president that has a force of a federal law but not actually a law
- president is the head of the entire bureaucracy of the executive department and they all answer to the president so they are influenced by the president although they need the senate for funding
- signing statement
- an additional statement that the president can offer when signing a bill into law that informs the nation how they would interpret it and how they would execute it
- executive agreement
- an agreement between president and other head of state that isn’t exactly a treaty but an agreement
limits on the executive branch
the senate has the power of advice and consent meaning many presidential appointments have to first be approved by senate
- impeachment
- 22nd amendment limits presidential terms to 2
- doesn’t have the power to declare war
federalist 70
- argues for an energetic executive
- allows for more decisiveness in time sensitive situations
-allows one person to be responsible if people try to find which one of them is to blame - allows secrecy, unity, and peace (in case factions are made arguing for one executive over another)

- technology makes it so much easier to reach audiences without 3rd party mediators
