4/20 Matter Cycling in Ecosystems Flashcards
1
Q
Reservoir
A
area where carbon can be stored and exchanged with other reservoirs
not long term permanent storage
2
Q
Types of Reservoires
A
- Atmosphere (active)
- Terrestrial (active)
- Ocean (inactive/active)
- Sedments (inactive but active with human use)
3
Q
Photosynthesis
A
solar energy+12 water+6 carbon dioxide —> 1 carbohydrate+6 water+6 oxygen
4
Q
Eutrophication
A
- process where excess nutrient (typically nitrogen from farming) gets into freshwater, wreking havoc on the ecosystem
- the algae in the water grows too much, and will leave a huge coat on the surface of the pond
- this prevents proper decomposition bc plants on the bottom are dead
