4 Flashcards
Ionic bond
The electrostatic attraction between ions of opposite charges.
Atom
Smallest particle that can still have the chemical characteristics of an element
Ion
Ion is the particle formed when an atoms gains or loses electrons.
p and n remains the same
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element with the same number of p but different number of n
Why are atoms unreactive?
- outermost shell is full
Atoms that do not have a not full valence shell gain or lose atoms to achieve a stable noble gas electronic configuration ( SNGEC )
Ionic compounds
neutral substance made up of ions of opposite charges
noble gas electronic configuration
noble gases have a full valence electron shells
cations/ positive ions
more protons than electrons, net positive charge
negative ions
more electrons, net negative charge and usually have a noble gas electronic configuration
metal atoms
lose electrons and from positive
non metal
gain electrons and form negative
ionic structures
forms a giant ionic lattice
valency
number of electrons that must be lost, gained or shared to obtain SNGEC
why are atoms hard to break
shells overlap as electrons shared so closely
octect electronic configuration
the atom has 8 electrons in its outermost shell
duplet electronic configuration
The outermost shell with two electrons
Polyatomic ion
2 or more atoms covalent bonded
covalent bond vs ionic bond
Covalent bond : share electrons
Ionic bond : transfer of electrons through an electrostatic bond of attraction between atoms of opposite charges
Valence shell
Outermost shell
