What are the land and water like in your area? How have people used the land in your region?
What are the four main regions of California?
Coast, mountain, valley, desert
region
(n.) a large area that has similar features

Describe the desert region.
Summers are hot and dry. Winters can be cold. Many areas are low and flat. Some animals and plants are adapted to life in this region with little water.
Describe the valley region.
The valley is long, low, and flat with mountains on the eastern and western sides. The San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers flow through the region. Much of the valley region is used as farmland.
Describe the coast region.
The coast region likes along the Pacific Ocean. There are mountains, cliffs, and giant redwood trees in the north. The central coast has good soil for farming. There are also wetlands, sand dunes, and beaches.
Describe the mountain region.
Much of the state’s drinking and crop-growing water comes from the mountain region. There are lakes, waterfalls, forests, and many state and national parks. Most of the mountains are in the north and east areas.

(n.) a narrow waterway that has been dug across land. Canals, such as the Panama Canal, can make travel by water faster.

(v.) to keep someone or something safe
Who was John Muir?
He was an environmentalist that worked to protect California’s resources more than 100 years ago. Redwood National Park was established in 1968 because of his work telling the world about California’s beauty.
