3A- The Circulatory System Flashcards
What is the function of the circulatory system?
Get food and oxygen to each cell in the body
Humans have a double circulatory system. What is pumped where?
Deoxygenated blood is pumped to the lungs and returns to the heart
Oxygenated blood is pumped to all the other organs in the body. The deoxygenated blood returns to to heart to be pumped to the lungs again.
What is the purpose of the heart’s valves?
Make sure the blood is flowing in the correct direction
What are the three types of blood vessel, and what are their functions?
Vein- Take blood back to the heart
Artery- Carry blood pumped out of the heart
Capillary- Carry the blood to each cell
What is the purpose of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma?
Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to all cells in the body.
White blood cells defend against disease by producing anti-bodies, antitoxins and phagocytes engulf some pathogens.
Platelets are small fragments of cells that help the blood to clot, stopping microorganisms getting in and blood getting out.
Plasma carries everything.
What six things does plasma carry?
White+Red blood cells + Platelets Nutrients Urea from the liver to kidneys Carbon dioxide Hormones Antibodies and antitoxins
What does a stent do?
Keep the artery open to make sure blood can pass through to the heat
1 advantage and 1 disadvantage of a stent
Keeps the heart beating
Patient must continue to take drugs to stop blood clotting on the stent
What is artificial blood?
Blood substitute which can be used to replace a lost volume of blood. Allows patient to produce new blood cells.
What is an artificial heart, and why is it used?
Mechanical heart which pumps blood around the body if their heart fails.
Advantage and disadvantage of artificial hearts
Not rejected by the body’s immune system
Surgery can lead to infection and bleeding.
