3.8.1: transport in animals Flashcards
what are 3 factors that influence the need for a transport system?
small SA:V ratio as there won’t be enough SA to absorb/remove substances in relation to their volume
long diffusion pathway due to their size so direct diffusion would be too slow and the organism would die
the metabolic demands of multicellular organisms are much higher compared to single celled organisms so they need large amounts of O2/nutrients and produce lots of waste products
what are 3 features of a good transport system?
has a fluid/medium to carry materials like O2 or waste products around the body (blood
has a pump that creates pressure which will push fluid around the body (heart)
has exchange surfaces to enable substances to enter/leave the blood when needed (capillaries)
