3.74 Ecology Flashcards
Ecology
The study of the inter-relationship between organisms and their environment includes abiotic and biotic factors
Population
group of individuals of one species occupying the same habitat at one time
Community
all populations of different species living and interacting in a particular place at the same time
Environment
Includes both abiotic and biotic factors of an area
Habitat
place where an organism lives, characterised by physical conditions and other types of organisms present
Ecological Niche
How an organism fits into the environment. Where it lives and does there. Governed by biotic and abiotic conditions to which the organism is adapted to in order to have a viable population.
Ecosystem
made up of a community and all abiotic factors of an environment. Can be large or small areas
Carrying Capacity
Population size of a species an ecosystem can support
Abiotic Factors
non-living factors
- rainfall
- temperature
- soil pH
Biotic Factors
living factors
- competition
- predation
Biotic interactions of a species in it’s niche
- What it eats
- what eats it
Abiotic interactions of a species in it’s niche
- times of day it’s active
- temperature it can survive at
What does it mean to have a unique niche?
only one species can occupy a niche at a time
What happens if two species occupy the same niche?
they will compete until one succeeds, the other species will die out, only one species will remain
Adaptation
features members of an organism have that increase their chances of survival and reproduction
