3.7 nervous system Flashcards
function of synapse
single impulse along one neurone can be transmitted to a number of diff neurons at 1 synapse- allows a number of simultaneous responses
function of synapse
number of impulses can be combined at a synapse- allows stimuli from diff receptors to interact to produce a single response
features of synapse
unidirectional
features of synpase
spacial summation- number of diff presynaptic neurone together release enough neurotransmitter to exceed threshold value of post synaptic neurone
features of synapse
temporal summation- single presynaptic neurone releases enough neurotransmitter many times over a short period. If total amount exceeds threshold value of postsynaptic neurone, then new action potential triggered.
reflex definition
rapid response to a stimulus that is involuntary/automatic and protective in function
