3.7 - Going Green Or Mean? Flashcards
Recycling
When manufactured goods are reused, instead of being sent to landfill.
Reduced Ecological Footprint
Reduce the amount of landfill space, and methane production.
Reduces electricity consumption to produce ‘new resources’.
Alternative Strategies
Use new super materials e.g. Graphene.
Export the recycling waste to low cost labour.
Design and mass manufacture.
Local Agena 21
Banning free plastic bags.
Circular Economy
Shifting the cost of production/waste onto manufactures so they have to find ways to maximise profits by reusing components.
Why Might Recycling Work
Reduces need for landfill sites. Reduced need for new resources. Can be done by householders. Waste already sorted. Meet EU/national government targets. Lower tax on landfill for council. Smaller bins encourage people to be less wasteful.
Why Might Recycling Not Work
Time/Space/Cost/ can’t lift bins associated issues.
Lack of education over green agenda.
Too complicated to understand it’s goodness.
More collections increases transport pollution.
Energy still used to reprocess.
Waste gets sent abroad where the poor are exploited to sort it.
Other priorities should be invested in or consumption just reduced.
What Helps A Circular Economy Work?
Incentives provided for care. Build using durable materials Reduce emissions - lower tax. Use cheaper materials Encourage customers to upgrade and pass cars onwards.
