3.6 prokaryotic cells and viruses Flashcards
what are viruses?
acellular, non-living particles
how is genetic material stored in eukaryotic cells vs. prokaryotic cells?
eukaryotic:
- distinct nucleus with nuclear envelope
- DNA associated with histones
- DNA is linear
prokaryotic:
- no true nucleus, area of DNA only
- DNA not associated with proteins
- some DNA in plasmids
what type of cells are membrane-bounded organelles?
eukaryotic
which type of cell have smaller ribosomes?
prokaryotic
which type of cell have chloroplasts? where is it present in?
eukaryotic; in plant and algae cells
what are eukaryotic cell walls made up of?
cellulose
what are prokaryotic cell walls made up of?
murein
which type of cells might have capsules?
prokaryotic
how are viruses replicated?
1) attachment proteins attach to receptors
2) viral nucleic acid enters cell
3) nucleic acid is replicated in cell
4) cell produces viral proteins/capsid/enzymes
5) virus is assembled & released from cell
