3.6- Organic analysis Flashcards
Which peak represents the parent molecule
The molecule that has the largest mz value
What is a molecular ion
An ion that has one electron knocked off
What is high resolution mass specrometry
HRMS can be used to determine the molecular formula of a compoud from the accurate mass of the molecular ion
Why will there be an M peak and an M+2 peak when a compound contains chlorine and bromine
These occur due to the different isotopes of chlorine and bromine, these allow for different peaks
What will the ratios of M and M+2 be for chloro ethane and dichloro methane
For chloromethane the ratios will be 3:1
For dicholoroethane the ratios witll be 9:6:1
What will the ratios of M and M+2 be for bromomethane and dibromoethane
Bromomethane ratios will be 1:1
Dibromoethane ratios will be 1:2:1
What is the fingerprint region
The fingerprint region is the region below 1500 cm-1, it is complicated and contains many signals, picking out the functional group signas is very difficult
What are rogue absorptions
They indicate impurities
