3.5 - Motion - Newton's laws of motion and momentum Flashcards
What does it mean for an object to be in equilibrium ?
It is not accelerating and is either stationary or moving at a constant velocity
What does Newton’s third law state ?
Every force has an equal and opposite reaction
What is Newton’s second law ?
F = ma
What is Newton’s first law ?
An object at rest or moving with constant velocity will stay that way unless a resultant force acts upon it
(inertia)
What is an elastic collision ?
The kinetic energy before is equal to the kinetic energy afterwards so no energy is lost
What is an inelastic collision ?
The kinetic energy at the end is not equal to the kinetic energy at the start with some of the energy being lost to the surroundings
What is the momentum equation ?
Momentum = mass x velocity
What is the rate of change of momentum also know as ?
Resultant force
What is impulse
The change in momentum -
FΔt = Δ(mv)
What is the equation for the principle of conservation of momentum ?
m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2
