3.4 tides Flashcards
what are tides?
the change in depth of water
what is a tidal range?
the difference between high and low tides
what causes tides?
the pull from the moon and sun’s gravity on the ocean
what is inertia?
a resistance to a change in state of motion
what are spring tides?
they have the the largest tidal ranges, and only happen when the gravitational pull of the sun lines up with the moon
what are neap tides?
they have the smallest tidal ranges and happen when the gravitational pull of the sun and moon are at right angles (90˚) to each other
if there was a high tide at 2pm, when would the next high tide be?
2am
define harbour
places where boats and ships can load and unload passengers and cargo
define coastal
describes places on land that are beside the sea or the ocean
define earthquake
sudden movement in the earth’s crust
define volcano
mountain where lava and gas can escape from beneath the earth’s crust
name two effects of tides
earthquakes, affect food chains, volcano eruptions, generate electricity, boats cannot move safely at harbours, coastal areas are likely to flood if tides are too high
what is used to measure water levels?
staff gauge
