3.4 structural adaptations Flashcards
what is adaptation strategies?
efforts to adjust climate change and its effects to reduce harm to people, the environment and properties
what are the 4 different types of adaptation strategies?
- structural
- social
- technological
- institutional
what are structural adaptations?
-involve the construction of physical structures for water and flood management
- to strengthen community resilience against sea level rise and flooding due to climate change
what are the limitations of structural adaptations?
economic:
- cost of construction$$
- maintenance cost of maintaining infrastructure$$
social:
-displacement of people living near coastal areas
what are some examples of structural adaptations?
- sea walls
- water storage tanks
- polder
what are seawalls?
- a wall along the coast to prevent the sea from advancing onto land
- protection against coastal floods
what is an example of a sea wall?
East Coast Park, Singapore
what are polders?
- low-lying land that is protected by dykes/barriers
- excess water pumped out from low-lying area
what is an example of polders?
Netherlands
-have been building polders since the 12th century which have protected them from river and coastal flooding.
what are water storage tanks?
-infrastructure to store excess stormwater when there is excessive rainfall
-prevents flooding by slowing down the water from rushing into canals/drains.
what is an example of water storage tanks?
Stamford detention tank, SG
-allow excess water to flow into detention tank and be stored there temporarily
-when water level in drains decrease, water in tanks released back to drains.
