3.4 - Genes and Environment Flashcards
What two things cause a difference in phenotype?
- Genetic makeup (genotype)
- The environment in which an individual develops`
What is monohybrid inheritance?
Each allele codes for one characteristic, and each characteristic is controlled by only one allele
What is polygenic inheritance?
The characteristic is controlled by alleles at several different loci
What is a multifactorial condition?
The condition is caused by genes at multiple loci, as well as environmental factors
What is the pigment that makes hair and skin darker?
Melanin
What cells is melanin made in?
Melancyotes
What hormone stimulates melanin production?
Melancyote-stimulating hormone (MSH)
What organelles do melancyotes place melanin into?
Melanosomes
How does melanin make skin darker?
Melanosomes are transferred to nearby skin and hair cells, where they collect around the nucleus, protecting the DNA from UV light
How does UV light darken the skin?
It increases the amount of MSH and MSH receptors,
