3.4 Force and momentum Flashcards
What is the equation for momentum?
p = mv
Define momentum
The momentum is an objects mass times its velocity
Define the impulse of a force
The force times the time that the force acts for. Therefore the impulse is the change in momentum of an object
What are the units for momentum?
kgm/s
How do you calculate the force of an impact?
Change in momentum/change in time, mv-mu/t
What rule do we use in momentum interactions and what equation goes with it for 2 objects?
Initial momentum = Final momentum
m1v1 + m2v2 = m1u1 + m2u2
What is an elastic collision?
A reaction where kinetic energy is conserved
Why would an inelastic reaction occur?
Because some of the kinetic energy before the collision has deformed one of the objects
When would an inelastic collision occur?
When 2 objects stick together after a collision
What is the units of an impulse?
Newton seconds, Ns
What equation links momentum and force?
Force = change in momentum/change in time
