It has spread to the mainland to form a CONURBATION, which is an extended urban area, typically consisting of several towns merging with the suburbs of a central city

What is Mumbai’s national significance?
It’s deep water harbour has made it India’s second largest container port. It’s waterfront is 10km long which allows for huge port development with manufacturing industries nearby
What is Mumbai’s international significance?
It’s location on India’s west coast makes it closer to Europe via the Suez Canal than other Indian ports. Shipping times to Europe from Mumbai are five days shorter than from Kolkata in the East Coast
Why is Mumbai a great location for businesses?
Mumbai is 9 hours away from UK airports, a 4 hour flight to Singapore, under 3 hours to Dubai and other Middle Eastern countries. This means that it is possible for business men/women to travel between these countries in one day.
Where is the CBD located?
It was built around the harbour, so the CBD is located on the southern tip of the peninsula , centred on the old banking sector of the city.
Why are house prices so expensive in Mumbai?
Because of its location - As it is a peninsula bound by the Arabian Sea, there isn’t much scope for expansion or land development in the city as it is surrounded by water on three sides. This means that development has never been circular, but has been linear from the south towards the northern suburbs. This limited supply creates a higher demand, which causes prices to rocket!

They are the first area of suburbs developed to house workers in the old textile mill area. Some of this area has become characterised by squatter and slum settlements including Mumbai’s largest - Dharavi
