3.4 Flashcards
What is tranoranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
Procedure where an electromagnetic pulse is delivered to a targeted region of the brain
What is magnetic resonance imaging? (MRI)
Structural imaging technique where clear images of the brain are created based on how different neural regions absorb and release energy while in a magnetic field
What is an Electroencephalogram? (EEG)
Measures patters of brain activity with the use of multiple electrodes attached to the scalp
What is magnetoencephalography?
Neuroimaging technique that measures the tiny magnetic fields created by the electrical activity of nerve cells in the brain
What is positron emission tomography?
Type of scan which a low level of a radioactive isotope is injected into the blood and its movement to regions of the brain engaged in a particular task is measured
What is hypnosis?
A procedure of inducing a heightened state of of suggestibility
What is idemotor suggestions? (In hypnosis)
Specific actions that can be preformed
What is challenge suggestions in hypnosis?
Actions not to be performed so that subject appears to lose the ability to perform an action
What is cognitive-perceptual suggestion in hypnosis?
Subject remembering or forgetting specific information or experiencing altered perceptions such as reduced pain sensations
Hypnosis is based on an interaction between what?
1) automatic (unconscious) thoughts and behaviours
2) supervisory system
What is lesioning?
Technique in which researchers internally damage an area in the brain
What is the dissociation theory?
Hypnosis is a unique state in which consciousness is divided into 2 parts: an observer and a hidden observer
What is the social-cognitive theory?
Explains hypothesis by emphasizing the degree to which beliefs and expectations contribute to increased suggestibility
_______________ suggestions specify that certain actions cannot be performed while hypnotized
Challenge
Hypnosis has been shown moderately successful for what 4 things?
Addiction
Pain therapy
Depression
Anxiety
