3.3.2 Ozone Depletion Flashcards
1
Q
What are Fluorochlorocarbons?
A
- Chemically inert
- Non flammable
- Non toxic
Used as refrigerators, propellants for aerosols and solvents for drycleaning
Most common haloalkane
E.g. CCl3F and CCl2F2
2
Q
What are hydrofluorocarbons?
A
Contain carbon, hydrogen and fluorine only
Eg. CH2F-CF3
Chemically inert and have lots of uses
3
Q
Whats bad about Chlorofluorocarbons?
A
They absorb lots of UV light in upper atmosphere, broken down by UV light forming Cl radicals, reacting with ozone layer and breaking it down
Thats why hydrofluorocarbons are used instead of chlorofluorocarbons because they don’t contain chlorine atoms
