3.3 the nervous system Flashcards
What is a sensory neuron?
A neuron that conducts nerve impulses from sensory receptors to CNS.
What is a motor neuron?
Conducts impulses from CNS to effectors
What is a interneuron?
Relays nerve impulses between sensory and motor neurons.
What is a nerve pathway?
Describes the path of nerve impulses between sensory receptors, the CNS and effectors
What are 5 different types of reflexes?
- Pillary
- Stretch
- Coughing and sneezing
- Shivering
- non-ciceptive flexion reflex
What is a reflex response?
An automatic response to a stimulus that is not under direct control of the brain.
What is a neurotransmitter?
Small molecules that facilitate transmission of nerve impulses between neurons.
How are neurotransmitters released from the cell?
By exocytosis through channel proteins.
What are neurons?
The primary cell type in a nervous system that enables a rapid transmission of nerve impulses between sensory receptors, control center and effectors.
What is the nervous system?
A communication system that allows animals to sense and respond to changes in there internal and external environment.
What is a synapse?
A nerve impulses that transmit electrochemical signals between nerve cells in central and peripheral nervous systems.
What does the central nervous system (CNS) do?
coordinates and directs responses
What does the peripheral nervous system (PNS) do?
transmits nerve impulses between sensory receptors, control center and effectors.
What are some examples of different neurotransmitters?
- Acetylcholine
- Norepinephrine
- Dopamine
- Serotonin
