3.3 Factors Affecting CPU Performance Flashcards
What is CPU Performance?
The speed at which the CPU can process data.
Factors affecting CPU performance:
- Number of cores.
- Clock speed.
- Cache.
What is a CPU core?
A single set of the components needed to perform the Fetch-Decode-Execute cycle.
What is clock speed?
The speed at which instructions can be processed. Measured in Hertz (Hz). 1 Hz is equivalent to 1 cycle / second.
What is overclocking?
Increasing the clock speed of the CPU past what the manufacturer designed it to run on.
What is cache?
A type of RAM that stores data that may be needed for future processing.
How does increasing the number of cores affect clock speed?
Increasing the number of cores will increase the clock speed, however all the cores have to take turns accessing the RAM and Cache and this affects speed.
