3.3 Coastal Landforms Flashcards
Name 8 landforms that are caused by erosion
cliffs wave cut platforms headlands bays caves arches stacks stumps
Formation of cliffs
they form as the sea erodes the land
over time, the cliffs retreat due to the action of waves and weathering
Formation of wave cut platforms
weathering and wave erosion cause a notch to form at the high water mark- this developed into a cave
the rock above becomes unstable with nothing to support it and it collapses
this creates a wave cut platform which are flat surfaces left behind when a cliff is eroded
Example of a cliff and wave cut notch platform
Lannacombe Bay in South Devon
Formation of headlands and bays
form when there are alternate soft and hard rock along the coastline
the soft rock is eroded quicker than the hard rock, this forms bays and headlands
Example of a headland and a bay
Swanage bay
